Ultrasonic Cleaning
We frequently use elbow grease to
clean the encrusted components of our beloved vintage radios. Soapy water and
a toothbrush allow us to get into the interstices.
For a long time, manufacturers have used ultrasonic baths to clean quickly and efficiently devices that are not afraid of water. Ultrasonics accelerate cleaning, but the nature of the detergent is crucial.

To verify the effectiveness of such systems, I built a cleaner with a capacity of one liter.

cheapcommercial ultrasonic baths allow a cleaning volume of around 1 dl. Baths for processing parts or devices occupying several liters have prices of several thousand euros.
To verify the effectiveness of such systems, I built a cleaner with a capacity of one liter.
THE PROTOTYPE

1/ THE STAINLESS STEEL TANK

THE TRANSDUCERS
Find 4 piezo discs at ST Quentin Radio. They are stated to operate around 4KHz and for peak voltages of 30V. We will make them operate at 40KHz. The transducer discs are glued with Araldite.

3/ THE 40KHz OSCILLATOR
Classic oscillator based on CMOS. The frequency is determined by (R1+R2) C1.
The potentiometer will allow precise adjustment.
The TEST button allows hearing the bowl "sing" at an audible frequency for checking the operation of the DRIVERS without taking out the oscilloscope.
The gates are 74HCT00.
R1=4.7K — R2=10K — C1=3.3n — C2=33n

It amplifies the signal from the 40KHz oscillator in power and applies it to the 4 piezo discs. From a power supply of 40W and 15V DC, the H-bridge circuit based on Darlington transistors allows applying square signals such that VAB peak= 30V.

4/ LE DRIVER
Il permet d'amplifier en puissance le signal issu de l'oscillateur 40KHz et de l'appliquer aux 4 pastilles piézo. A partir d'une alimentation continue de 40W et 15V, le montage en H à base de transistor Darlington permet d'appliquer des signaux carrés tels que VAB crête= 30V.
